Steve Jobs Bashes Kindle

There’s no doubt that Steve Jobs is a visionary. He’s a man who seems to know what people want - and don’t want - when it comes to technology. And one of the things he’s sure people don’t want is Amazon’s Kindle wireless reading device.

When speaking with NYT’s John Markoff at Macworld Expo, Jobs had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

I disagree. I think that people ARE reading plenty. Maybe they’re not reading as many books as they used to, but I think they’re still reading blogs, magazines, newspapers and content on the web.

And if 40% of Americans read one book or less last year could one assume that 60% read more than one book? Or is that 60% not reading anything?

What do you think based on your personal reading habits, your family’s and friend’s? Are people still reading? Or is this nation slowly becoming illiterate

As a side note: I checked out Amazon’s web site and currently the Kindle is sold out.

I think I’ll build websites with blank pages since people aren’t reading anymore. Yeah that should go over very well.

I’m wondering what he was thinking about when he said that? Perhaps ole Steve has a new device up his sleeve and wants to shoot down the Kindle, lol.

I agree he is a visionary he’s definitely out of focus with the reading. He also has to take in account that people, like myself, more than make up for the people that don’t read. I cannot even tell you how many books I read per year.
