Morning People vs Night Owls

I’ve often read that one of the best times to write — or do anything creative — is in the morning right after you wake up. There’s supposedly something about your brain chemistry at this time that makes the ideas flow more freely.

But I’m not a morning person.

Well, let me clarify that. I don’t want to be a morning person. I have to be because of my ‘real job’, but if I had my way, I’d sleep until 11 a.m and go to bed around 1 or 2 a.m.

In fact, I think that I’m often more creative at night. As a cartoonist, I often come up with ideas late at night and I’m writing this at close to 9:30 p.m. Of course that’s probably more of an indication that it’s Saturday night and I have no social life than it is of me being more creative at night.

So I did a little Googling and found an interesting study from the British Psychological Society that seems to indicate that night owls tend to be more creative, independent and non-conformists.

What say you? Are you more productive and creative in the morning or at night?

I’m a morning and night owl.

I’m up early usually by 3:00. That’s when I do most of my writing. During the regular morning hours, I devote to my regular business, and I hunt for other freelance jobs.

I’m productive at night I’m usually hanging with my four-year old daughter. A few days ago I attempted to complete an article while she was awake that didn’t go over well, lol.

Interestingly enough the past few weeks I’ve been dreaming about writing my articles. Upon awakening I rush to my MacBook Pro and write down some of the information from my dreams.

I’m pretty useless in the morning and in the early afternoon. Actually, there’s like this window of about two or three hours where I’m any good, and if I actually accomplish anything, I usually need a nap afterwards. LOL!
